Afro Basaldella, regarded as Italy's preeminent abstract painter, rose to fame under the pseudonym "Afro," signing his works solely with his given name. Early Life and Education

Born in 1912 in Udine, Italy, Afro hailed from a family of artists. Surrounded by his father and uncle who worked as decorators and his two older brothers who later became sculptors, Afro sought to distinguish himself by using only his name. After studying in Florence, Venice, and Rome, Basaldella received a diploma in painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice in 1931. His first solo exhibition took place in Milan at the tender age of twenty.

From 1935 onwards, Afro became a regular exhibitor at the Quadriennale in Rome and the Venice Biennale.
