Biography of Agnes B

Agnes B is a French fashion designer and the head of her own fashion brand. In addition to her fashion business, she is actively involved in the film industry.

Early Life and Career

Agnes had a turbulent youth - she became a mother of twins at the age of 19 and got divorced at 20. After graduating from the Versailles School of Fine Arts, she pursued a career in design. One of Agnes's creations caught the attention of a specialist from the magazine 'ELLE' at a flea market. Despite primarily using products from the French retail chain 'Monoprix' in her designs, Agnes focused more on the price of the materials rather than their popularity among French fashionistas. However, the magazine's management was interested in Agnes's creations and hired her as a junior editor. Nevertheless, Agnes was more inclined towards design than fashion journalism, and she only stayed at 'ELLE' for two years. She soon became a design apprentice, even though the work was poorly paid and did not offer weekends off. Eventually, Agnes worked her way up to the position of designer and press attache for Dorothée Bis. She also worked on orders for 'Limitex', 'Pierre d'Alby', 'V de V', and 'Eversbin'.

Establishing 'agnes b.'

In 1966, Agnes founded the company 'Comptoir Mondial de Creation,' which later became the precursor to her fashion label 'agnes b.' She opened her first boutique in 1975 in a space that was once occupied by a butcher shop. The boutique had a simple and friendly atmosphere, with black and white tiles, swings for the younger visitors, and an improvised birdcage. Initially, Agnes's friends were her first regular customers, but the boutique gradually gained well-deserved popularity.

Expansion and International Recognition

Agnes began designing clothing for men in 1981. Within two years, she expanded internationally by opening a store in New York. Agnes enthusiastically conquered America, as she had a deep love for crime noir films even before she came to France. The store was decorated in a noir style, with antique advertising posters being one of its essential elements. Eventually, the store caught the attention of American filmmaker Harmony Korine, and their fruitful collaboration began in 1999.

Diversification and Global Presence

In 1987, Agnes launched the cosmetics and skincare line 'Le B Perfume.' Her interests gradually expanded, leading her to create clothing for young mothers, as well as footwear, bags, watches, glasses, and cosmetics under the 'L'Oréal' brand. Agnes's products were sold in London, Amsterdam, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and New York. However, she remained determined not to settle, and her next plan involved expanding into the Asian market by opening stores in Beijing and Shanghai.

Film and Independent Projects

Agnes and Harmony Korine's joint film production company, 'O'Salvation,' continues to operate successfully. Under this company's logo, Harmony released the film 'Mister Lonely' in 2006. Agnes has also worked on independent projects, such as the film 'Love Streams,' which was released with the blessing of Gena Rowlands, the widow of the director of the 1984 film of the same name, John Cassavetes.
