Early Life and Education

Karin Maria Paula Großmann, an Austrian-Canadian conductor, was born to Ferdinand Großmann and raised in a musical environment. She pursued piano studies under Bruno Seidlhofer at the Vienna Academy of Music and Pierre Sancan at the Paris Conservatory.

Early Career as a Pianist

Großmann embarked on a promising career as a concert pianist, touring internationally from 1969. However, in 1972, a hand injury abruptly ended her aspirations.

Transition to Conducting

Undeterred, Großmann shifted her focus to conducting. She studied under Karl Österreicher and Günther Theuring at the Vienna Academy of Music from 1974 to 1978.

Life Between Austria and Canada

Since 1981, Großmann has balanced her life between Austria and Canada. She initially taught at the University of Ottawa, which later awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2004.

Conducting in Canada

Großmann led numerous Canadian orchestras, most notably the Metropolitan Orchestra of Greater Montreal (1986-1995). She also directed summer music courses and festivals.

Vienna Boys' Choir

From 1996 to 1998, Großmann served as the artistic director of the Vienna Boys' Choir, an ensemble previously led by her father. This period culminated in the choir's 500th anniversary celebration and the recording of a commemorative album.

National Chorus of Taiwan

Since 2006, Großmann has been the artistic director of the National Chorus of Taiwan.
