Agnesh Keleti - Hungary's Famous Gymnast and Olympic Champion
Agnesh Keleti is a renowned Hungarian gymnast and a five-time Olympic champion (1952, 1956). Born into a Jewish family, she began her gymnastics training at the age of four and went on to achieve great success in her career.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite her early talent and dedication to gymnastics, Keleti faced numerous challenges during her career. The outbreak of World War II led to the cancellation of the 1940 Summer Olympics, temporarily halting her training. During the Holocaust, Keleti survived by posing as a Christian and living in a village. Unfortunately, her father perished in Auschwitz, but her mother and sister managed to hide and were eventually saved by Raoul Wallenberg.
Olympic Success
After the war, Keleti qualified for the 1948, 1952, and 1956 Olympic Games. However, before the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the Soviet Union sent troops to Hungary, prompting Keleti to make the decision to permanently settle in Australia. Along with 44 other Hungarian athletes who left their homeland after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, she obtained political asylum.
Life After Gymnastics
Later on, Keleti emigrated to Israel, where her mother and sister also relocated. In Israel, Keleti worked as a physical education instructor. Her contributions to the sport of gymnastics were recognized when her name was included in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, USA in 2002.
Recognition and Legacy
In 2017, on February 14th, Agnesh Keleti was honored with the State of Israel Prize for her contributions to physical culture and sports. She is currently the oldest living Olympic champion and her inspiring journey continues to inspire athletes around the world.
