Biography of Agnieszka Holland

Agnieszka Holland is a Polish director who has also worked in various countries in Europe and the United States. She graduated from the directing department of the Prague Film Academy FAMU in 1971, where she was an assistant to director Krzysztof Zanussi. She made her debut in 1975 with the television series "An Evening at Abdon's" and one of the novellas in the film "Pictures from Life's Other Side".

Early Works

Holland's early works include "Sunday Children" and a novella in the film "Screen Tests" (Zdjecia probne, 1976), "Something for Something" (1977), "Provincial Actors" (1978, winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979), "Fever" (Goraczka, 1980), and "A Lonely Woman" (Kobieta Samotna, TV film, 1982, released in 1988). These films positioned her as one of the leading figures in the "cinema of moral anxiety". However, Holland stood out from her Polish contemporaries as her films were clearly influenced by the "Czech school", combining a harsh documentary style with an inclination towards exploring simple everyday situations with elements of lyrical comedy.

International Recognition

After the imposition of martial law in Poland, Holland remained abroad and directed politically engaged films such as "Bitter Harvest" (Bittere Ernte, 1985), "To Kill a Priest/Conspiracy" (Popieluszko, 1988), and "Europa, Europa" (1991). She also directed films about childhood, such as "Olivier, Olivier" (1993) and "The Secret Garden" (1995), as well as films about past eras including "Total Eclipse" (1995) and "Washington Square" (1997). Holland also co-wrote the screenplays for films by Andrzej Wajda, including "Without Anesthesia" (Bez znieczulenia), "Danton", "A Love in Germany" (Eine Liebe in Deutschland), and "Korczak".
