Early Life and Church ServiceHis Eminence, the Cardinal, was ordained as the titular bishop of Nona on March 20, 1985, and subsequently served as auxiliary bishop of Madrid-Alcalá until July 24, 1992.
Archbishop of Valencia
On July 24, 1992, he was appointed Archbishop of Valencia, a position he held until January 8, 2009. During his tenure, he served as Apostolic Administrator of Valencia from January 8 to April 18, 2009.
Cardinalate
In recognition of his distinguished service to the Church, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI on November 24, 2007. He was granted the titular church of San Marcello al Corso, which he holds to this day.
