Biography of Ahmed Javad Gajiev
Ahmed Javad Gajiev was an Azerbaijani and Soviet composer, as well as the rector of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory from 1957 to 1969. He was designated as a People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1960 and became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1951. Gajiev was born on June 5, 1917, in Nukha, now known as Sheki.
Education and Career
In 1938, Gajiev graduated from the Azerbaijan State Conservatory under the tutelage of L. M. Rudolf. Later, in 1947, he completed his studies at the Moscow State Conservatory named after P. I. Tchaikovsky, studying under D. D. Shostakovich. Following his education, Gajiev began his teaching career at the Baku Conservatory. He was not only a composer but also a prolific educator.
Works
Gajiev co-authored the patriotic opera "Veten" ("Homeland") with Kara Karayev. He composed numerous works for string quartet, piano, choir, and other ensembles. His notable compositions include eight symphonies, the symphonic poem "For Peace!" (1951), an Azerbaijani suite, and a symphonietta. His eighth symphony, titled "Chosen by Time," is dedicated to G. A. Aliyev and features poetic text by Farida Lyamam.
Personal Life and Legacy
Ahmed Javad Gajiev was married to the renowned Azerbaijani dancer and People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR, Amina Dilbazi (1919-2010). He passed away on January 18, 2002, and was laid to rest in Baku at the Alley of Honor.
Awards and Honors
Throughout his career, Gajiev received numerous awards and honors, including the title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1960. He was also the recipient of the Stalin Prize of the second degree in 1946 for his opera "Veten" (1945) and the Stalin Prize of the third degree in 1952 for his symphonic poem "For Peace!" (1951). Additionally, Gajiev was awarded the Order of Lenin on August 20, 1986, and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour on June 9, 1959.
