Ahmed Abdallah Sambi: A Biography
Early Life and EducationAhmed Abdallah Sambi was born on 5 June 1958, in Mutsamudu, Anjouan Island, Comoros. He received his education in Islamic institutions in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. His studies in Iran and his physical appearance earned him the nickname "Ayatollah."
Political Career
Sambi entered politics as an independent candidate in the 2006 presidential elections. In the first round, he received 23.70% of the votes. In the second round, he was elected President of the Comoros with 58.02% of the votes.
Sambi's presidency marked the first peaceful transition of power in the country's history. He promised not to turn the Comoros into an Islamic state, arguing that religion cannot be imposed by force.
Presidency
As President, Sambi focused on combating corruption, creating jobs, and improving living conditions. He also pledged to strengthen the country's economy.
Personal Life
Sambi is a father of seven children. He owns several businesses, including factories that produce mattresses, bottled water, and perfume. His residence is located above his "The House of Mattresses in Mutsamudu" store on Anjouan Island. He also owns a television channel called "Ulezi" (Education).
Legacy
Sambi left office in 2016. He remains an influential figure in Comorian politics. His presidency was marked by both progress and challenges, but he is remembered as a symbol of peaceful transition and a champion of economic development.
