Early Life and Career
Akbar Djuraev was born on October 8, 1999, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. At the 2017 World Junior Championships, he finished sixth in the 105 kg weight class with a total of 352 kg. In 2018, he won the gold medal at the Asian Junior Championships and the silver medal at the World Junior Championships.
International Breakthrough
At the 2018 World Championships, Djuraev won the gold medal in the snatch in the 102 kg weight class, lifting 180 kg. He also won the bronze medal at the 2019 Asian Championships and the champion at the 2019 World Junior Championships.
Olympic Glory
Djuraev's greatest achievement came at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he became the Olympic champion in the 109 kg weight class, setting an Olympic record. He repeated his success at the 2023 World Championships, winning the gold medal with a total of 415 kg.
Later Career
At the 2024 Summer Olympics, Djuraev competed in the men's 102 kg weight class and won the silver medal, lifting 404 kg, just 2 kg less than the champion Liu Huanhua.
Legacy
Djuraev is widely considered one of the greatest weightlifters of his generation. He holds the junior world record in the 109 kg weight class and has won multiple Olympic and world championship medals. For his achievements, he was awarded the honorary title "Uzbekistan Iftikhori" (Pride of Uzbekistan).
