Akiyo Noguchi: A Japanese Climbing Superstar
Akiyo Noguchi is a Japanese sport climber specializing in bouldering and has also excelled in lead climbing. She is a World Cup winner and multiple medalist at the World Championships. Noguchi has competed in the Japan Cup nine times from 2005 to 2014, setting a record for Japanese climbers. She has also participated in the Olympic Games.
Early Life and Climbing Beginnings
Akiyo Noguchi was born on May 30, 1989. She grew up on a cattle farm in Ibaraki Prefecture. From a young age, she enjoyed climbing on buildings, trees, and even cows. In 2000, at the age of 11, she tried a real climbing wall for the first time during a vacation to Guam. Upon returning home, she immediately joined a local climbing gym, and her father built her a climbing wall in an old barn on the farm.
Impressive Competition Record
Noguchi made her mark at the Bouldering World Cup in 2007, winning a trio of medals. In 2009, she claimed the Bouldering World Cup title, dethroning the defending champion Anna Stöhr. Noguchi went on to win the World Cup again in 2010, 2014, and 2015. She placed second overall in the Bouldering World Cup in the 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons. She has also won the Combined World Cup three times.
Noguchi was honored with the La Sportiva Competition Award in 2010 "for her victories and the positive attitude she transmits while competing." In 2019, she won a silver medal in the Combined event at the Climbing World Championships, securing her spot at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Olympic Dreams and Retirement
Noguchi initially planned to retire in 2016, but when sport climbing was announced as an Olympic discipline in 2020, she decided to continue her career to qualify for the home Games. Noguchi made her final World Cup appearance in Innsbruck in June 2021. Throughout her career, she competed in 169 World Cup events and secured 75 podium finishes. She published an autobiography on July 13, 2021.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Noguchi ranked ninth in Speed Qualifying, third in Bouldering with three tops and four zones, and sixth in Lead Climbing, topping 27+ holds. This performance placed her fourth overall and qualified her for the final.
Climbing Style and Legacy
Akiyo Noguchi is renowned for her exceptional technique and fluidity. Udo Neumann, a German climbing coach, created a video analyzing her key qualities titled "Factors Deciding Boulder Comps - the Art of Akiyo Noguchi." The video highlights her adaptability, which allows her to find unique solutions to the problems she faces. Additionally, her impressive mobility enables her to execute moves that are beyond the reach of many of her competitors.
