Biography of Bashar al-Assad

Bashar al-Assad is the current President of Syria. He was born on September 11, 1965, in Damascus, Syria.

Education and Early Career

Assad received his medical education and training in ophthalmology. He completed his internship at an ophthalmological center in the United Kingdom. However, in 1994, he had to interrupt his studies when his older brother, Basil, died in a car accident. Assad returned to Syria and became the commander of the armored forces and the chairman of the Syrian Computer Society. In this latter role, he initiated the process of "internetization" of Syria, aiming to modernize the country.

Political Career

In 1999, Assad was promoted to the rank of colonel and began playing a more active role in the government. He met several heads of states and was appointed as the head of the campaign to eradicate corruption. Following his father's death in June 2000, Assad was declared the commander of the Syrian armed forces and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. The ruling Ba'ath Party elected him as its general secretary and nominated him as the sole candidate for the presidency.

Presidential Term

In July 2000, Assad assumed the presidency after winning a nationwide referendum. During his inauguration speech, he primarily addressed the country's economic issues and the need for modernization. He also emphasized the importance of resolving the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights, which were captured during the Arab-Israeli War in 1967.

As President, Assad has faced numerous challenges, including the outbreak of civil war in Syria in 2011. His leadership and policies have been controversial, with many accusing him of human rights violations and the use of chemical weapons against his own people.
