Tahir al-Jazairi: Syrian Statesman and President

Early Life and Education

Tahir al-Jazairi was born into a prominent Syrian family in the late 19th century. His father, Ahmad Izzat Pasha al-Abid, served as an advisor to Sultan Abdul Hamid II and as chief of his secret service. Jazairi received his higher education in Beirut and at the law faculty in Paris.

Ottoman Diplomat and Exile

In 1908, Jazairi became the Ottoman Empire's ambassador to Washington. However, that same year, the Young Turks deposed Sultan Abdul Hamid II. As a result, Jazairi's father fled Istanbul, and Jazairi joined his father in exile in Europe and Egypt.

Return to Syria and Political Career

Jazairi returned to Damascus in 1920 after Syria became a French Mandate territory. In 1922, he served as Syria's Minister of Finance.

Presidency and National Liberation Movement

From 1932 to 1936, Jazairi served as President of Syria. During this period, the national liberation movement intensified, particularly after the unpopular Taj ed-Din al-Hassani was appointed Prime Minister.

Resignation and Retirement

Upon the expiration of his term, Jazairi resigned and left for Paris. He remained a staunch advocate for Syrian independence until his death in 1936.
