Biography of Alain Robbe-Grillet
Alain Robbe-Grillet was a writer, film director, and the creator of the literary movement known as "Nouveau Roman" or "New Novel." He was born in Brest and received his education in agronomy. After completing his studies, he spent several years working on the island of Martinique.
Early Works
In 1953, Robbe-Grillet published his novel "Les Gommes" ("The Erasers"), followed by the successful book "Le Voyeur" ("The Voyeur") in 1955. In 1957, he released the novel "La Jalousie" ("Jealousy"). Before the emergence of the "Nouveau Roman" manifesto in 1963, Robbe-Grillet wrote the screenplay for one of the most famous films of the French New Wave, "L'année dernière à Marienbad" ("Last Year at Marienbad") by Alain Resnais.
Later Works
Robbe-Grillet went on to direct several of his own films, including "Trans-Europ-Express," "Le Jeu avec le feu" ("Playing with Fire"), and "C'est Gradiva qui vous appelle" ("Gradiva"). In the 1970s, he published novels such as "Projet pour une révolution à New-York" ("Project for a Revolution in New York") and "Topologie d'une cité fantôme" ("Topology of a Ghost Town"). His last book, "Un Roman Sentimental" ("A Sentimental Novel"), was released in 2007.
Academic Career and Legacy
In 2005, Robbe-Grillet was elected as a member of the French Academy but did not attend any of its sessions. Despite this, his contributions to literature and film have left a significant impact. He is remembered as a pioneering figure in the "Nouveau Roman" movement and a master of experimental storytelling.
