William Seward Burroughs
American poet and playwright William Seward Burroughs, a prominent figure of the Beat Generation, was born on Long Island and received an education at Harvard University, where he excelled in several languages.
From Secretary to Beat
In the years 1948-1949, Burroughs served as a secretary and research assistant to W. H. Auden. His association with the Beat Generation writers and poets transformed him from an academic to a literary icon. Burroughs himself became a source of inspiration for many characters in Beat works, including Rollo Greb in Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," and A. J. in William Burroughs' "Naked Lunch."
Life in Athens
From the late 1960s onwards, Burroughs resided primarily in Athens, Greece, where he continued to engage with a diverse group of writers, including James Merrill and Chester Kallman.
