Carlos Alan Autry was born on July 31, 1952, in Louisiana, United States. His parents were Carl Autry and Vera Brown. Life was going well for Alan until his parents separated, forcing him to mature at a young age. When Alan turned twelve, his family settled in California, where the future actor worked alongside his mother and stepfather. His responsibilities included various field work, such as harvesting cotton, grapes, and other crops.

When Autry entered high school, he quickly excelled in various areas. He performed well academically and played American football superbly. After a period of time, Alan became a football star, with the quarterback position becoming his successful niche. Alan played as a quarterback for various teams. He gained special attention from American football experts when he played for the Pacific University team in Stockton, California.
