Biography of Alan Doyle

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Canadian folk-rock musician Alan Doyle, born Alan Thomas Doyle, grew up in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From an early age, Doyle had a passion for music, starting with an old acoustic guitar and later progressing to an electric guitar, which he played almost every day. However, he gained the most recognition not as a guitarist, but as a mandolin and banjo player – both stringed instruments that he excelled at.

Education and Formation of 'Great Big Sea'

Doyle's parents, Thomas and Regina Doyle, raised him and his three siblings in a religious household. Eventually, they sent their children to Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Canada. It was during his time at university that Alan met his future bandmates for 'Great Big Sea': Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, and Darrell Power. Before the formation of 'Great Big Sea', Doyle also played in other bands such as 'Staggering Home', founded by his uncle, and various university friends' bands.

Success with 'Great Big Sea'

In March 1993, 'Great Big Sea' performed their first show, opening for the popular band 'Irish Descendants'. Surprisingly, the audience enjoyed their performance just as much as the headliners, which motivated Alan and his friends to continue writing songs and performing in small Canadian bars, hoping to someday achieve fame. Their second album, titled 'Up', went platinum, and subsequent albums also achieved significant success. In the 2000s, there were some minor lineup changes in the band, but Alan and the other original members remained.
