Clarence Clemons: The Big Man
Clarence "Big Man" Clemons (January 11, 1942 - June 18, 2011) was an American musician and actor. He was best known for his work as a saxophonist in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.
Early Life and Influences
Clemons was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and grew up listening to gospel music. At the age of 9, he received a saxophone as a Christmas gift and began playing in his school's jazz band. His musical influences included Curtis Mayfield and The Coasters.
Music Career
The Vibratones and Tyrone AshleyIn the early 1960s, Clemons played with the group The Vibratones. He also recorded an album with Tyrone Ashley called "Let Me Be Your Man," which was not released until 2007.
Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band
In 1971, Clemons met Bruce Springsteen and joined the E Street Band. He became an integral part of the group's sound, contributing iconic saxophone solos to songs such as "Blinded by the Light" and "Spirit in the Night."
Solo Projects and Collaborations
In addition to his work with Springsteen, Clemons released several solo albums. He also collaborated with other musicians, most notably Jackson Browne on their 1985 hit "You're a Friend of Mine."
