Alan Kennedy: From Local Boy to Liverpool Legend
Alan Kennedy, a former English football defender, is best known for his remarkable achievements with Newcastle United and Liverpool. Born in Sunderland, he managed to evade the attention of his hometown club and unexpectedly joined their arch-rivals, Newcastle United.
From Newcastle to Liverpool
At 19, Kennedy played in the FA Cup final for Newcastle, witnessing their defeat by his future club Liverpool. Two years later, at the same venue, Newcastle again lost, this time to Manchester City in the League Cup final. In 1978, Liverpool manager Bob Paisley purchased Kennedy to address their persistent problem on the left flank.
Triumph in Merseyside
Kennedy's debut for Liverpool in 1978 marked the beginning of a triumphant era. He contributed to the club's First Division victory in his first season, forming a solid partnership with namesake Ray Kennedy on the left wing. A thigh injury sidelined him for much of the 1980/81 season, but he returned in time to make significant contributions.
European Triumphs and Goal-Scoring Defender
In 1981, Kennedy played in the League Cup final, scoring the equalizing goal in the replay against West Ham. The highlight of that season, however, was the European Cup final in Paris. Kennedy's decisive strike secured Liverpool their third European Cup title. His consistent performances saw him establish himself as a key component in Liverpool's title wins in 1982, 1983, and 1984. In the following year, he scored again in the replayed League Cup final against Manchester United.
Treble Triumph and Departure from Liverpool
1984 marked a historic year for Liverpool with a remarkable treble, including the league title, League Cup, and European Cup. Kennedy's crucial penalty in the latter's final against Roma cemented his legacy. However, with the emergence of Jim Beglin, Kennedy was sold to Sunderland in 1985.
Post-Liverpool Career and Legacy
Kennedy maintained his form in his first season at Sunderland but faced competition from Frank Gray in his second. Following Sunderland's relegation, he played for Hartlepool, where he embarked on a continental journey, representing clubs in Sweden, Belgium, and Denmark. He returned briefly to professional football with Wrexham in the Football League before continuing his career in non-league teams.
Today, Alan Kennedy is a respected figure in Liverpool's history. He remains a club analyst, columnist, and regular participant in the Reds Veterans team. He also runs a football academy and hosts a radio show on 'century fm'. His achievements with Liverpool earned him the 31st position in the club's official '100 Players Who Shook The Kop' poll.
