Early Life and Naval Career

Admiral Sir Alan West was born in 1948 and entered the Royal Naval College, Britannia, in 1965, commencing his distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He graduated from the Naval Staff Course, Higher Command and Staff Course, and the Royal College of Defence Studies.

Commanding Officer and Falklands Campaign

In 1996-1997, West commanded the UK Naval Task Group. During the Falklands Campaign, he led the victory parade in London.

Senior Naval Appointments

West held several high-ranking positions within the Royal Navy:
- Chief of Naval Intelligence, 1997-2000
- Commander-in-Chief Fleet, 2000-2002
- First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, 2002-2006
Government and Peerage

From 2007-2010, West served as the Under-Secretary of State for Security and Counter-terrorism. In May 2010, he became a member of the Privy Council and was elevated to the peerage in 2007 as Baron West of Spithead.
