Biography of Alannah Myles

Canadian pop-rock singer Alannah Myles was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1958, in Toronto, Ontario. Her father's creative work as an advertising director on the radio, along with her Canadian-Irish roots, influenced her ambitions as a future singer. Alannah spent her childhood moving from Toronto to the northern town of Bakhorn in Ontario, where her family owned a ranch and raised horses. Her father gifted her a filly, which Alannah sold to buy herself a good guitar for performing in clubs. Alannah sang in the Catholic church choir, performing Gregorian hymns. She wrote her first song at the age of 8, titled "Ugly Little Cabbage In The Garden," which she used to tease her younger sister, Rosinn.

Early Musical Journey

Alannah began playing music on a citre given to her as a birthday present when she was six years old. In secret, she also learned to play the mandolin. She studied music notation on a regular guitar. Her idols included Canadian artists Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, as well as Aretha Franklin and the band "Pretenders." Despite her parents' opposition to her desire to become an artist, Alannah persistently pursued her goal. From the age of 15, Alannah Myles participated in school rock bands and performed her first solo concert in South Ontario on her eighteenth birthday. A few years later, she met Christopher Ward and joined his rock band. They performed cover versions of songs by Aretha Franklin, "Pretenders," Bob Seger, as well as songs written by Alannah, passing them off as little-known covers. This continued for several years.

Rise to Fame

During this time, Alannah completed college and obtained a diploma in graphic arts, performed in equestrian shows, and appeared in television commercials. Eventually, after weighing her options, Alannah fully dedicated herself to music. For some time, Alannah Myles and Christopher Ward unsuccessfully tried to attract Canadian producers until they met American producer David Tyson. Their magnificent debut came in 1987 with the single "Black Velvet," which Ward wrote for a Canadian television program dedicated to Elvis Presley. The song topped the charts in the United States and Canada and paved the way for Alannah Myles' first solo album, "Alannah Myles." The album sold over six million copies worldwide and achieved platinum status in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. In Canada, the release received the platinum certification ten times. In addition to three Canadian Juno Awards, Alannah also received a Grammy Award for "Best Female Rock Vocal." Her next album, "Rockinghorse," was released in 1992 and reflected the singer's inner sadness. Three years later, her album "Alannah" showcased her Irish chaos. In 1998, she recorded her fourth album, "Arrival," followed by a compilation of her greatest hits. Afterward, there was a long period of silence.
