An Early Battle for Survival
Alannah Shevenell, from the state of Maine in the United States, was just five years old when her life was hanging by a thread. A cancerous tumor, called myofibroblastoma, grew inside her, gradually compressing her esophagus and making it impossible for her to eat. Alannah rapidly lost weight, felt weak, and constantly had a fever. When the problem was discovered, a standard tumor removal surgery failed to produce results. As a result, Alannah's internal organs related to digestion were irreparably damaged. Chemotherapy did not help either, and the child remained between life and death.
A Groundbreaking Transplant Operation
In the end, American doctors from Boston Children's Hospital made the decision to perform an organ transplant. Alannah received a new esophagus, liver, stomach, spleen, pancreas, and small intestine, marking an unprecedented achievement in the field of transplantation. Not only was this the world's first six-organ transplant, but the operation also included the first successful transplantation of an esophagus. The operation lasted for 14 and a half hours and was a brilliant success, bringing great joy to Alannah's family. Soon after, Alannah began eating on her own again, a tremendous relief for her family and especially her grandparents, as she had been unable to consume food and was primarily fed through a tube.
A New Lease on Life
Alannah was soon able to return home and now lives with her grandparents. Although she will need to undergo regular medical tests for a long time, likely her entire life, her condition cannot be compared to what it was before the operation. Most importantly, Alannah has regained her sense of taste and interest in life. She smiles a lot and loves playing active games. There is a risk that Alannah will require further transplants in the future, and she will always need to take medication to prevent organ rejection. Unfortunately, there is no better treatment available for her condition. Despite this, she can be considered fortunate since all the necessary donor organs were found in time, and her body accepted the transplants perfectly.
A Little Fighter
Looking at a photo of Alannah Shevenell, one cannot help but be amazed by her lively smile. Only she and her loved ones truly know what she has been through. However, all the doctors from Boston Children's Hospital agree that this child is a true little fighter, which means she will be able to overcome any future challenges that may come her way. By the time Alannah turned 9 years old, her life was simply excellent, and it had been about four years since the start of her illness. At the age of nine, she knew numerous medical terms that her peers were unaware of. Currently, she should be around 15 years old, but unfortunately, her current fate remains unknown. All that is left is to hope that Alannah is still alive and enjoying every minute of the time she has been given on this earth.
