Biography of Don Ritchie

Don Ritchie, an Australian who saved over 160 people from suicide, was born in 1925 in Vaucluse, New South Wales. During World War II, he served in the Royal Australian Navy on the ship 'HMAS Hobart' and witnessed Japan's surrender in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. After returning home, he became an insurance salesman.

Nearly half a century ago, Don Ritchie read in the newspaper about the disturbing statistics of suicide at The Gap, a notorious cliff in Australia. Determined to help those who were desperate enough to end their lives, Ritchie became a guardian angel at The Gap, offering a glimmer of hope to those contemplating suicide.

A Lifeline at The Gap

Living near The Gap for many decades, Ritchie kept a watchful eye on the cliff. Whenever he spotted someone on the edge, he would drop everything and approach them with kindness. Ritchie engaged them in conversation, offering them a chance to reconsider their decision. He would often invite them to his home, along with his wife Moya, for breakfast or a cup of coffee. Many of these desperate individuals accepted the invitation and found solace in the warmth of the Ritchies' home.

An Angel's Legacy

Although Ritchie wasn't able to save everyone, he dedicated his life to trying. In recognition of his heroic efforts, he received awards from the government, including the prestigious Medal of the Order of Australia. In 2010, Don and Moya were named Citizens of the Year. Sadly, Don Ritchie passed away in the summer of 2012 at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and bravery. His wife Moya survived him, along with their three children.

The Gap cliff may never be the same without its guardian angel, but the impact of Don Ritchie's selfless actions will forever be remembered. Officially credited with saving 163 lives, his family believes the true number is closer to 500. Young and old, sick and healthy, Ritchie offered support to individuals from all walks of life who were equally trapped in their despair. Though no longer physically present, his spirit lives on, reminding us all of the power of empathy and kindness in saving lives.
