Alaungpaya: Founder of the Konbaung Dynasty
Early LifeAlaungpaya, a minor ruler of the Shwebo district, emerged as a prominent figure in 1752 when he rallied against the Mon dynasty ruling in Pegu.
Conquest of Burma
In 1754, Alaungpaya's forces captured Ava, which he established as his capital. Facing resistance from the Mons, he received support from numerous Burmese tribes and the Shan states. By 1755, he had conquered much of Burma and founded the port city of Rangoon.
Subjugation of the Mons and Shans
In 1756, Alaungpaya seized Syriam, a key Mon stronghold. The following year, he conquered Pegu, effectively defeating the Mon Kingdom despite French support. He also subdued independent Shan states.
Expansion and Demise
In 1759, Alaungpaya suppressed a British-backed rebellion in Pegu. In 1760, he marched his army towards Ayutthaya, the capital of Siam. However, during the siege, a misfired cannonball fatally wounded Alaungpaya, and his forces withdrew.
