Early Life and Education
Adamkiewicz, a Polish physician, initially pursued medical studies in Königsberg. Subsequently, he transferred to the University of Breslau, where he worked in the laboratory of Rudolf Heidenhain.
Military Service and Academic Pursuits
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Adamkiewicz briefly interrupted his studies to participate in the conflict. After the war, he continued his research in Würzburg with F. Recklinghausen.
Academic Success and Medical Contributions
In 1880, Adamkiewicz became a full professor in Kraków. Ten years later, he moved to the University of Vienna, where he held the same position. His significant contributions to medical science included extensive research on the anatomy and physiology of the brain and spinal cord, as well as their circulatory systems. He also made notable strides in the study of cancer.
Innovative Cancer Treatment
Adamkiewicz pioneered an innovative approach to cancer treatment by developing a substance known as "Cancroin." This product was derived from the metabolic processes of parasites discovered by Adamkiewicz, called Coccidium Sarkolytus.
