Early Life and Education

Born in Germany, this esteemed theologian was educated at the Protestant Seminary in Strasbourg. In 1837, he became a private lecturer at the seminary. His academic achievements culminated in a doctorate in theology from the University of Strasbourg in 1840.

Academic Career

After completing his doctorate, he became a lecturer in 1857. In 1864, he ascended to the prestigious position of Chair of New Testament Studies at the seminary. He later moved to the University of Kaiser Wilhelm, where he remained until his retirement in 1885.

Collaborative Endeavors

The theologian worked closely with Édouard Reuss, his former high school teacher. Together, they embarked on significant projects, including the first complete edition of Jean Calvin's works. These works were published in the Corpus Reformatorum.

Ecclesiastical Service

From 1881 to 1886, he served on the Consistory of the Augsburg Confession Church in Alsace and Lorraine. This appointment reflected his commitment to the Protestant faith and his contributions to ecclesiastical affairs.

Scholarly Publications

Beyond his collaborative work on Calvin's writings, the theologian authored numerous publications. His primary focus was on church history, providing valuable insights into the development of Christian thought and institutions.
