Albert Agarunov: Azerbaijani Tanker and National Hero

Early Life and Education

Albert Agarunov was born on April 25, 1969, in Surakhani, Baku, Azerbaijan. He was of Mountain Jewish descent. After completing eight grades of general education, he enrolled in the Azizbekovsky District Technical College, where he received training as a tractor driver. Agarunov also studied trumpet in a music school.

Military Service and the Karabakh War

In 1987, Agarunov was conscripted into the Soviet Army. He served in Georgia as a tank driver and rose to the rank of junior sergeant. After his military service, he worked at the Surakhani Machine-Building Plant.

When the Karabakh War broke out, Agarunov volunteered to fight, declaring that he was "fighting for the land where I was born." In battles around Stepanakert, Dashalty, and Jamilli, he destroyed a significant number of enemy forces and armored vehicles. According to Azerbaijani sources, the Armenians placed a bounty on his head.

The Battle of Shusha

As a tank commander, Agarunov was deployed to Shusha. On May 8, 1992, he led his tank into its final battle.

A Tragic Loss

During the fight, Agarunov's crew destroyed a second enemy tank. However, as they changed positions, he spotted the bodies of fallen comrades in front of his tank. Agarunov exited to retrieve them, but was fatally shot by an Armenian sniper.

Legacy

After his death, Azerbaijani tankers named their tanks "Albert" in his honor. By decree of President Ayaz Mutalibov, Agarunov was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan (Decree No. 833 of June 7, 1992). He was buried in the Alley of Martyrs in Baku.

Memorials

Baku Secondary School No. 154, where Agarunov studied, was renamed after him. A corner in the school is dedicated to his memory, featuring a bust of the hero and fresh flowers. School events are often held near the bust.
