Early Life and Education
Albert Benois was born into a family of artists, his father being the renowned watercolourist Alexander Alexandrovich Benois (Konsky). His father became his first teacher in drawing. Benois continued his education at the Institute of Civil Engineers in Saint Petersburg.
Career in Russia
After graduating, Benois taught at the Drawing School of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (OPKh). In 1910, he relocated to France to pursue further studies at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris.
Artistic Success and Exhibitions
From the 1920s onwards, Benois's artistic works gained recognition. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, and exhibitions of the "Icon" society, of which he was a member. His works were also featured in exhibitions of Russian art in Brussels, Belgrade, and Paris.
Architectural Masterpieces
Among Benois's most notable architectural creations are:- Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Russian Cemetery of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois near Paris, which he decorated alongside his wife, M. A. Benois.
- Monument to the White Army Gallipolians (with M. A. Benois) at the same cemetery.
- Memorial church at the cemetery of Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand (near Mourmelon), dedicated to the memory of Russian soldiers.
Other Artistic Contributions
Benois also designed over a hundred crosses and tombstones, including those for prominent Russian émigrés such as Ivan Bunin, Dmitry Merezhkovsky, Zinaida Gippius, and Ivan Shmelev.
