Early Career
Juan Capellas began his football career as a player in amateur teams in the lower divisions of Spain. In 1991, he transitioned into coaching as an assistant at the Catalan club Gavà.
Barcelona and Dutch Experience
From 1999 to 2003, Capellas served as an assistant to the reserve team coach at Barcelona. He then became the coordinator of youth development at the club. From 2010 to 2014, he worked in the Netherlands as an assistant to Albert Ferrer and John van den Brom at Vitesse.
Denmark and Israel
In 2014, Capellas went to Denmark as an assistant to Brøndby's head coach Thomas Frank. He left the club in 2015 but returned in 2016 to work with the club's U16 and U17 teams.
International Experience
After leaving Brøndby, Capellas moved to Israel where he became an assistant to Maccabi Tel Aviv manager Peter Bosz. He later followed Bosz as an assistant at Ajax Amsterdam and Borussia Dortmund. In 2018-2019, he assisted Jordi Cruyff at Chinese Super League club Chongqing Lifan.
Denmark Youth National Team
In June 2019, Capellas signed a contract with the Danish Football Union to become the head coach of the national youth team. Under his guidance, the Danish team qualified for the playoffs of the 2021 European Championship, defeating Russia 3-0.
