Albert Kapengut, born in a family of chess enthusiasts, emerged as an exceptional player. As a young boy, he honed his skills in Belarus and represented the Soviet Union in numerous student Olympiads.

Throughout his career, Kapengut dominated the Belarusian chess scene, winning several championships: 1962, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1976, 1977, and 1978. These victories established him as one of the top players in his country.

In 1971, Kapengut made a remarkable debut at the Soviet Championship, finishing in the top 10. He outperformed seasoned masters such as Anatoly Lein, Efim Geller, Rafael Vaganian, and Vladimir Tukmakov, showcasing his exceptional abilities.
