Albert Montañes is a Spanish professional tennis player who has achieved great success in both singles and doubles competitions. Throughout his career, he has won five ATP tournaments in singles and two in doubles.

Early Career

Montañes started his professional tennis journey by winning his first ATP Challenger tournament in Prague. In 2001, he reached the third round of the French Open and made it to the final of the ATP tournament in Bucharest, where he defeated the 20th ranked player in the world, Albert Portas. This success helped him finish the season among the top 100 tennis players in the world.

Breakthrough Success

In 2002, Montañes achieved his first career victory against a top 10 ranked player when he defeated Gustavo Kuerten, the second-ranked player in the world, at the Rome Masters tournament. He also reached the third round of the French Open for the second consecutive year. The following year, he secured another victory over a top 10 ranked player by defeating Rainer Schuettler, the eighth-ranked player in the world, at the Challenger tournament in Braunschweig.

Rise in Rankings

In April 2004, Montañes reached the final of the ATP International tournament in Valencia and then the semifinals of the more prestigious ATP Gold tournament in Barcelona. In 2005, he reached his first career final in an ATP Gold tournament in Acapulco, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. In 2007, after reaching the final of the Casablanca tournament, Montañes entered the top 50 tennis players in the world rankings for the first time. He also made a breakthrough in doubles, reaching three finals in Latin American clay court tournaments alongside his fellow countryman Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, defeating one of the strongest pairs in the world, Vizner and Dlouhy, in the Buenos Aires tournament.

Continued Success

In early 2008, Montañes continued his success in doubles, reaching the final of the tournament in Baie (Brazil) for the second consecutive year and then winning in Casablanca. In July, he won his first ATP singles tournament in Amersfoort (Netherlands). In 2009, he added two more singles titles to his name in Oeiras and Bucharest, defeating players such as Gilles Simon, who was ranked eighth in the world at the time. In January 2010, Montañes won his second doubles title in Doha, partnering with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. They defeated the second-ranked pair in the world, Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor, in the first round. He then went on to win the Oeiras tournament for the second year in a row, reaching the semifinals and defeating the world's number one player, Roger Federer. Prior to this, he had also defeated the ninth-ranked player in the world, Marin Cilic, in Monte Carlo.
