Biography of Albert Nalchadjyan

Albert Nalchadjyan is an Armenian scholar in psychology, ethnology, and philosophy. He was born on August 22, 1939, in Leninakan (now Gyumri), Republic of Armenia, as the second child in a family of five children. His nationality is Armenian. His father, Agabek Sarkisovich Nalchadjyan, was a teacher of Russian language and geography, while his mother, Arusyak Amazaspovna Nalchadjyan, received a secondary education and mainly focused on raising their five children.

After completing high school, Albert Nalchadjyan entered the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Yerevan State University. After graduation, he worked as a technician and later as an engineer for two years. However, in 1964, he enrolled in a graduate program in psychology at the Khachatur Abovian Armenian State Pedagogical Institute in Yerevan and dedicated his entire future life to psychology.

From 1968 to 1981, Nalchadjyan worked as a psychology teacher, assistant professor, and head of the Department of Psychology at the V. Brusov Institute of Foreign Languages in Yerevan. From 1981 to 1996, he worked at the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences as the head of the Department of Psychology. In 1996-1997, he was a visiting scholar at Fordham University in New York, USA. After returning to Armenia, he founded the Center for Psychological Research, which he still chairs.

Areas of Interest and Contributions

Albert Nalchadjyan's main areas of interest include personality psychology, social and ethnic psychology, psychology of creativity, and general psychology theory. Throughout his numerous works, he has developed several scientific theories and concepts, including the concept of psychological mechanisms of intuition, the theory of psychological adaptation of individuals in problem situations, the theory of levels of human mental activity, the theory of ethnic self-defense, and the interrelationships of intra-ethnic and interethnic aggression. He has also contributed to the field of ethnic characterology and theories of human aggressiveness. In recent years, he has been working on the concept of ethnic victimology and the psychological theory of ethnicocide, ethnogenesis, and fatalism.

Albert Nalchadjyan has authored four university and three school textbooks on psychology and has taught psychology in several universities in Armenia for about 30 years. Currently, he is fully engaged in research work. Over the years, he has been a member of several international psychological organizations.
