Early Life and Athletic Beginnings
Born in Moscow, two days before the outbreak of World War II, Albert Shesternev's early life was marked by his father's military service and the challenges of his mother, Anna, raising him alone. Despite the hardships, young Albert excelled in sports, particularly in track and field, becoming the Moscow youth champion.
Football Career
Entering the World of Football, Shesternev joined the Moscow-Yaroslavl Railway team, where he initially played as a goalkeeper. His exceptional skills soon earned him a place in the CSKA Moscow youth academy, where he transitioned to the position of central defender.
Capping a Glorious Era, Shesternev made his CSKA debut at the tender age of 17, becoming captain at 21. As a libero, he played a crucial role in the team's success, appearing in 278 Soviet Championship matches and scoring one goal. His career came to a premature end at the age of 30 due to a knee injury.
National Accolades and International Recognition, Shesternev's brilliance extended to the national team. He made his Olympic debut and was part of the Soviet squad that finished second in the 1964 European Championship. His exceptional performances at the 1966 World Cup and 1968 European Championship earned him accolades as one of the finest players in Europe. He was also nominated for the Ballon d'Or four times.
Coaching and Later Years
Venturing into Coaching, Shesternev transitioned to coaching after his playing career. He held various roles at his beloved CSKA Moscow, including head coach from 1982 to 1983. He also served as director of the club's football school.
Personal Challenges and Final Days, Shesternev's private life was turbulent. His first marriage to Olympic figure skater Tatiana Zhuk ended in divorce, after which he struggled with alcohol abuse. He found solace in his second marriage to Nina Mikhailovna, a barmaid at the Intourist Hotel. Albert Shesternev passed away in 1994 from cirrhosis of the liver and was laid to rest at the Kuntsevo Cemetery.
