Biography of Alberto Bayo

Alberto Bayo was a Spanish revolutionary and poet of Cuban descent. He served in the Spanish Air Force in the 1920s and participated in the Rif War in Morocco. Bayo was involved in the Balearic Islands operation during the Spanish Civil War. After the defeat of the Republican forces in the war, he went into exile in Mexico, where he taught at a military aviation school and traded furniture. He participated in the unsuccessful Caribbean Legion operation to overthrow the dictatorial regime of Trujillo in 1949. Based on his combat experience, Bayo developed a theory of guerrilla warfare tactics, including strategies for a guerrilla unit to break out of encirclement.

Bayo became an instructor for Fidel Castro and Che Guevara's unit. After the revolution, he returned to his native Cuba, where he was awarded the rank of general. He passed away in Havana in 1967. In addition to his revolutionary activities, Alberto Bayo was a poet. He published several collections of poetry, with his last one, "Mis versos," being released in 1965.
