Biography of Alberto Giacometti

Alberto Giacometti was a Swiss sculptor and artist, born on October 10, 1901 in Stamp, Switzerland. With a keen interest in art from an early age, Alberto began his artistic journey by studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Geneva from 1919 to 1920. He then continued his education at the studio of Édouard Marcel Grandjean, also known as E. Bourdelle, from 1922 to 1925.

Early Influences

During his time in Bourdelle's studio, Giacometti was influenced by cubism and aligned himself with the surrealist movement. While he occasionally worked in Paris and Rome, he always returned to his hometown.

Exploring Mass and Space in Sculpture

From 1925 to 1935, Giacometti focused on the relationship between mass and space in sculpture. He created several significant works, which he referred to as "sculptures in a cage." These pieces featured numerous parts enclosed within a frame or cage-like structure. Among his most famous works in this style are "The Palace at Four in the Morning" (1923-1933, Museum of Modern Art, New York) and "The Hanging Ball" (1930, Kunsthaus Zurich).

Study of Human Figures

After 1935, Giacometti primarily worked on studies of individual human figures, sculptural groups, and portrait busts. Influenced by Rodin, his sculptures featured rough, weathered surfaces, resembling a fantastical landscape with painterly shadows.

Recognition and Legacy

In the later years of his life, Giacometti received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the art world. Major retrospective exhibitions of his work took place at the Museum of Fine Arts in Zurich (1962) and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1965). Alberto Giacometti passed away on January 12, 1966, in the town of Chur, Switzerland.
