Biography of Alberto Gonzales

Alberto Gonzales was born on August 4, 1955 in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up in a family of eight children, with parents who were first-generation Mexican immigrants. His father worked as a builder.

Gonzales completed his high school education with distinction in 1973 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force. He later enrolled in a military academy and transferred to Rice University in Houston in 1977. Within two years, he obtained a degree in political science.

Afterwards, Gonzales attended Harvard Law School, where he graduated and began working in private firms while also teaching. In the late 1990s, he joined the government of the state of Texas, which was then led by Governor George W. Bush. During his time in the state government, Gonzales was responsible for the operations of the state's electoral commission and oversaw international relations matters.

Gonzales entered public prominence when he became the White House Chief Counsel, serving as the main legal advisor to President Bush. Despite not being a public figure in the previous administration, he gained a controversial reputation for his memo stating that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to terrorists captured in Iraq.

In light of his "sharp intellect and sound judgment," President Bush appointed Gonzales as the new Attorney General and the United States' chief prosecutor. The previous Attorney General, John Ashcroft, officially resigned due to health reasons.

Gonzales is married to Rebecca and they have three sons together.
