Alberto Sordi, an Italian film actor and director, was known for his refusal to acknowledge old age. His famous response to an elderly Italian woman who asked for an autograph "for an old lady" became a classic: "Sure, but where is this old lady?" Sordi continued his film career until shortly before his death, which occurred at the age of 82 on Tuesday. He passed away in his Roman villa, Numa Pompeius, after battling a severe illness that worsened in the last six months of his life. Throughout his final moments, his sister Amelia stood by his side.

Alberto Sordi began his career in the film industry at the age of 13 when he played his first role. However, true popularity came with his appearances in Federico Fellini's films "The White Sheikh" and "Mamma's Sons." Since then, "Big Alberto," as he was known in Italy, has starred in 190 films and received numerous international and national awards and accolades. Some of his notable works include "Mamma's Sons," "Everybody Go Home!," "The Great War," "Difficult Life" (released as "Journalist from Rome" in Soviet distribution), and "Boom."

In 1966, Sordi expanded his creative pursuits by becoming a director and screenwriter. He worked in both capacities as well as an actor in films such as "An Italian in America" (1967), "A Common Sense of Shame" (1976), and "I Know You Know That I Know" (1988). His last film, "Meetings Prohibited" (1999), featured Alberto Sordi in the lead role. Sordi was a frequent guest at the Moscow International Film Festival, further showcasing his international acclaim.

Honors and Recognition

In 2000, during the celebration of his 80th birthday, Alberto Sordi was awarded the prestigious Italian prize, "Bonino-2000." As a mark of respect for his immense contributions, the Mayor of Rome, Francesco Rutelli, presented him with an honorary ribbon and allowed him to use his office on the Capitoline Hill for a day, according to RIA "News." Shortly before his death, the legendary actor announced his retirement from the film industry, stating, "At 82 years old, it's time to finally settle down," during a celebration in his honor in Bologna.
