Early Life and Artistic Aspirations
Peter von Hess was born into a family of confectioners in Germany. Driven by his passion for art, he left home and settled in Munich in 1807.
Military Service and War Art
Inspired by the Napoleonic Wars, Von Hess joined the Austrian military and fought alongside Eugène de Beauharnais, the Viceroy of Italy. During these campaigns, he sketched and painted scenes of battle, capturing the horrors and grandeur of war. After the war's conclusion, he published a magnificent lithographic album, "Voyage pittoresque militaire," which showcased his masterful depictions of military life.
Royal Patronage and Artistic Triumphs
Von Hess's exceptional military paintings caught the attention of King Maximilian I of Bavaria, who acquired a significant portion of his best works spanning the years 1817-1824.
Later Works and Legacy
In 1829, Von Hess traveled to Stuttgart and focused on painting Arab horses. Later, in 1848 and 1849, he participated in a campaign in Sardinia and created an album of memoirs, "Erinnerungen an die Feidzuege der oest. Armee in Italien in den J. 1848 u. 1849."
Von Hess's final and largest masterpiece was "The Battle of Zorndorf," a monumental work depicting the conflict during the Seven Years' War.
Artistic Lineage
Peter von Hess was not only an accomplished artist but also the patriarch of a talented artistic family. His brother, Heinrich, and sons, Benno, Eugen, and Franz, were all renowned painters in their own right.
