Alcamenes: The Warrior King of Sparta
Early Life and ReignAlcamenes was a renowned Spartan king from the Agiad dynasty who ruled in the 8th century BC. According to Eusebius' Chronicle, he commenced his reign in 814 BC and led Sparta for 37 years until 777 BC. However, alternative accounts suggest a 38-year reign, with the First Olympic Games taking place during his tenth year in power.
Military Exploits
Alcamenes' reign was marked by significant military victories. His Spartan forces successfully besieged and destroyed the coastal city of Helos, then inhabited by Achaeans. They also fought against the Argives, who had come to the aid of the Heleans. Additionally, Sparta dispatched Harmidius to Crete to quell internal strife.
First Messenian War
In the first year of the First Messenian War (743 BC according to Pausanias), Alcamenes commanded the Spartan army in an expedition against Amphea. Tragically, he fell during the battle.
Legacy and Oracles
Alcamenes left behind a legacy as a brave and charismatic leader. Plutarch records three of his sayings, which showcased his wisdom and foresight. Notably, he and his contemporary, Theopompus, received an ominous oracle predicting that "a passion for amassing wealth would one day destroy Sparta."
