Saint Adelgundis

Saint Adelgundis, a revered figure in the Roman Catholic Church, was a virgin, abbess, and the sister of Saint Waldetrude. Celebrated on January 30th, her devotion remains strong today.

Origins and Early Life

Adelgundis was born into nobility in the town of Maubeuge, within the kingdom of the Frankish Merovingian dynasty. Her parents, Saint Walbert and Saint Bertilia, resided in the province of Hainaut, Flanders.

Choice of Divine Path

Despite familial expectations of marriage, Adelgundis yearned for a life dedicated to the Church. She established a modest monastery on the banks of the Sambre River near Maubeuge. This humble abode evolved into a thriving Benedictine abbey, with Adelgundis serving as its first abbess.

Historical Documentation

Information about Adelgundis has been preserved in the Bollandists' Acts, a comprehensive collection of hagiographies that chronicles the lives of saints. These accounts provide valuable insights into her piety and the impact she had on her community.
