Apfia: A Revered Early Christian Martyr

Early Life and Ministry

Apfia, a revered early Christian martyr, lived in Colossae, Asia Minor, during the first century. According to tradition, she was married to the apostle Philemon, as mentioned in Paul's letter to Philemon (Philem. 1:1-2). As a devoted Christian, Apfia dedicated her life to serving God and others. In her home, she established a church where she diligently prayed, fasted, and welcomed those who spread the Gospel of Christ.

Charity and Service

Beyond her spiritual activities, Apfia was a compassionate woman who tirelessly served those in need. She provided food and shelter to the poor, wretched, and travelers. Her home became a sanctuary for all who sought rest and solace. Through her extraordinary hospitality, she transformed her residence into a place of worship, a guesthouse, a hospital, and a refuge for the outcast.

Martyrdom and Glory

During the reign of Emperor Nero (54-68 AD), Apfia's faith was tested. During a festival honoring the goddess Artemis, the citizens of Colossae stormed her church and apprehended Apfia and Philemon, as well as the local Christian leader Archippus. Archippus was brutally murdered for refusing to participate in pagan rituals. The city governor, Artoklis, sentenced Apfia and Philemon to death by stoning.

While Archippus and Philemon were canonized as apostles, Apfia was venerated as equal to the apostles for her unwavering faith and tireless service. Her memory is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on February 19 (March 3) in leap years or February 19 (March 4) in non-leap years, and November 22 (December 5) in the Catholic Church.
