Biography of Aldo Ray
Early Life and Military ServiceAldo Ray, born Aldo DaRe, was born in 1926 in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, to a family of Italian descent. He had five brothers and a sister, although only one of them achieved fame in the 1950s as a football player. When he turned 18, Ray volunteered for the army and served in the Navy. After his discharge, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, but dropped out a few months later. He then moved to Crockett, California, with his young wife Shirley Green and their daughter Claire.
Early Acting Career
While living in Crockett, Ray decided to help his brother by driving him to a film studio where auditions were being held for the movie "Saturday's Hero". Although his brother was rejected, Ray caught the attention of director David Miller, who offered him a small role in the film. Over the next few years, Ray appeared in various low-budget films and TV series. His popularity eventually reached Hollywood, and he went on to star in films such as "Marrying Kind," "Pat and Mike," and "Let's Do It Again". Ray even won a Golden Globe Award for Best Newcomer for his role in "Pat and Mike".
Rise to Fame
In 1953, Ray divorced his first wife and focused all his free time on his acting career. His breakthrough came with the film "Miss Sadie Thompson" in 1954, which marked the beginning of his most successful period. The following year, he starred in movies like "Battle Cry," "Three Stripes in the Sun," and "We're No Angels," which many critics consider to be his best work. In 1956, Ray moved to New York and attempted to start a career as a radio DJ at WNDR. However, he soon returned to California and continued his acting career.
Later Career and Personal Life
From 1957 to 1968, Ray appeared in over a dozen films, including "Naked City," "Day They Robbed the Bank of England," and "I moschettieri del mare". However, by the late 1960s, his career began to decline, despite his role in the moderately successful film "The Green Berets". In 1960, Ray married Johanna Ray, with whom he had three children. In the 1970s, he made a comeback in films but was unable to regain his former popularity.
Later Years and Death
Towards the end of his life, Aldo Ray returned to Crockett, California, where he passed away on March 27, 1991, from throat cancer. His body was cremated, and his ashes were interred at the local cemetery.
