Biography of James Rebhorn

James Rebhorn was an American actor of stage, film, and television. Throughout his life, he played over 100 roles in movies, on stage, and in television series, each of which varied significantly from one another.

Early Life and Education

James Rebhorn was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James Harry Rebhorn, an industrial engineer. He had a German heritage and was raised in the Lutheran faith. As a child, James moved with his family to Anderson, Indiana. He attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where he specialized in political science and was a member of the student fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha.

After graduating from university in 1970, Rebhorn moved to New York City where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University's School of the Arts.

Career

Rebhorn started appearing in various stage productions and quickly established himself as a versatile actor. He excelled in roles such as lawyers, politicians, doctors, military personnel, and criminals. Rebhorn made his initial appearance on the NBC series "Law & Order" as a recurring serial killer before returning as a regular character.

In 1992, Rebhorn starred in the films "Scent of a Woman" and "My Cousin Vinny." The following year, he played a role in "Carlito's Way." One of his most renowned roles was in the 1996 film "Independence Day," where he portrayed the Secretary of Defense.

Rebhorn also had a successful career on television. He is remembered for his portrayal of Bradley Raines in the soap opera "Guiding Light" from 1983 to 1985, and Henry Lange in "As The World Turns" from 1988 to 1991. From 1981 to 1982, he played John Brady in the series "Texas." In 1994, Rebhorn took on the role of the supervillain John McFlemp in an episode of the Nickelodeon series "The Adventures of Pete&Pete."

In more recent years, Rebhorn appeared in various projects such as the film "The Box," the TV series "White Collar" and "Homeland," the comedy show "Big Lake," and the 2011 action film "Real Steel."

Personal Life and Death

Rebhorn resided in South Orange, New Jersey. On March 21, 2014, he passed away at his home after a long battle with melanoma. He had been diagnosed with the disease in 1992 but continued to fight it. Rebhorn was survived by his wife, Rebecca Linn Rebhorn, and their two daughters, Emma and Hannah Rebhorn. He was 65 years old at the time of his death.
