Alexander Rahr - German Political Scientist and Internationalist
Alexander Rahr is a German political scientist and internationalist who has made significant contributions to the development of German-Russian relations. He was awarded the highest honor of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bundesverdienstkreuz, for his achievements in this field.
Early Life and Education
Alexander Rahr was born to famous emigration activist Gleb Alexandrovich Rahr and Sofia Vasilievna Rahr (nee Orehova). He attended Munich University from 1980 to 1988, where he studied Eastern European history, contemporary history, and political science.
Career
From 1977 to 1985, Rahr worked as an external research associate in a project on Soviet leaders at the Federal Institute for Eastern European and International Studies in Cologne. He then served as a research associate at Radio Free Europe Research Institute in Munich from 1982 to 1994.
In addition, Rahr worked as a consultant for the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica from 1986 to 1994. He conducted research in the Soviet Parliament in 1990 and worked at the East-West Institute in New York from 1990 to 1991. Rahr also served as an unofficial advisor to the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg from 1992 to 1995.
From 1994 onwards, Rahr has been a research associate at the Research Institute of the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP). He is currently the Director of Programs for Russia and the CIS at the German Council on Foreign Relations. Rahr is also the publisher of the CIS Barometer.
Contributions and Honors
Rahr has been recognized for his significant contributions to German-Russian relations and was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2003. He has also been appointed as an honorary professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
Rahr is a member of the Board of Directors of YES (Yalta European Strategy) and the Valdai Discussion Club. He has authored biographies of Mikhail Gorbachev (1986) and Vladimir Putin ("Der Deutsche im Kreml", 2000). He is currently preparing a biography of Sergey Ivanov (2008).
