Early Life and Military Career

Alexander Grigoryevich Vazhinsky was born on February 27, 1910, in Maikop, Russia. After completing his primary education, he worked as an electrician. He joined the Soviet Army in 1933 and graduated from the Kharkov Military Aviation School in 1936.

World War II

Vazhinsky saw action in the Great Patriotic War from May 1943 onwards. He initially served with the 18th Bomber Aviation Regiment and later with the 6th Bomber Aviation Regiment. He fought on the Voronezh Front and the 1st Ukrainian Front, participating in battles such as the Battle of Kursk, the Battle of Kiev, and the Lvov-Sandomierz Offensive.

Heroism and Command

On March 16, 1945, while leading a group of nine Pe-2 bombers, Vazhinsky orchestrated a successful bombing raid on a concentration of railway echelons in Leobschütz. As a result, up to 50 railway carriages were destroyed, causing five major fires.

During the war, Vazhinsky commanded a squadron that carried out 554 combat missions, destroying numerous enemy vehicles, fuel depots, and ammunition stores. He also introduced the tactic of using Pe-2 aircraft for "free hunting," attacking enemy targets without prior intelligence.

For his exceptional bravery and leadership, Alexander Vazhinsky was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on June 27, 1945. He also received the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, and the Medal "For Battle Merit."

After the war, Vazhinsky retired from the army in 1947 and settled in the city of Sochi. He passed away on October 2, 1970, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a skilled aviator and a courageous wartime hero.
