Early Career and Journey to Belgium
Alexander Yakovlenko began his football journey with Kyiv-based Lokomotiv, before making a move to Metalist Kharkiv. Seeking a wider stage, he embarked on a path that would lead him to Belgium, with a brief transit through Germany.
After impressing on two trials with German powerhouse Schalke 04, Yakovlenko was offered a contract. However, the intensity of the first-team environment prompted him to decline and accept an offer from Belgian club Lierse instead. Despite not facing any trials, he caught the attention of Schalke, who ensured a provision in his contract allowing for a potential move to Germany in the future.
Rise to Prominence with Lierse
At the tender age of 18, Yakovlenko made his debut in the Belgian top flight, the Jupiler League. His exceptional talent quickly propelled him to a leadership role within the team. His rapid progress attracted interest from Belgian giants Standard Liège and Genk, as well as Dutch club AZ and a French club that offered a five-year contract, which Yakovlenko politely declined.
Transfer to Genk and Challenges
Ultimately, Genk's proposal of a three-year contract proved most appealing. While parting ways with Lierse was amicable, the transition to a higher-profile club presented new challenges. Yakovlenko initially struggled to secure regular playing time, often finding himself in the reserve team. Nonetheless, he gradually earned opportunities on the main squad, which went on to finish second in the league that season and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Disappointing Season and Departure from Genk
However, the following campaign did not go according to plan for Genk. A poor start in the Champions League and subsequent struggles in the domestic league meant that the team struggled to maintain their form. As a result, coach Hugo Broos prioritized experienced players, leaving Yakovlenko less involved. Clashes between the two led to a mutual understanding that it was time for Yakovlenko to move on.
Transfer to Anderlecht
During the winter transfer window, rumors emerged of a potential move to Roeselare, which ultimately fell through. As the window drew to a close, Yakovlenko found himself on the cusp of a move to an even bigger club: Anderlecht. Credit for the successful transfer goes to his agent, Andrei Golovash, who also represents the likes of Andrey Voronin, Ruslan Valeev, and Dmitry Bulykin. Golovash orchestrated a loan deal to Brussels with an option to buy, giving Yakovlenko the perfect opportunity to prove his worth at the former club of legendary Ukrainian goalkeeper Oleh Yashchuk.
