Russian Film Director Alexei Mizgiryov
Early Life and EducationAlexei Mizgiryov was born in Russia and graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at Tomsk State University in 1998. In 2004, he completed his studies at the directing department of the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), where he studied under the tutelage of Vadim Abdrashitov.
Short Films and Early Career
During his time as a student, Mizgiryov directed several short films that garnered recognition at student film festivals. His short film "Firing" (2005) was selected for the competition program at the Kinotavr Russian Film Festival. Additionally, Mizgiryov served as an assistant director on Abdrashitov's film "Magnetic Storms" (2003).
Feature Films and Recognition
In 2007, Mizgiryov released his debut feature film "Kremen," which won several awards at domestic and international film festivals. His subsequent film, "Tambourine, Drum" (2009), solidified his status as one of Russia's most distinctive filmmakers.
"Tambourine, Drum" earned numerous accolades, including the Silver Leopard Special Prize at the 62nd Locarno International Film Festival and the award for Best Director. Natalia Negoda, who made her return to cinema after a hiatus, received the Golden Eagle Award for Best Actress and the White Elephant Award from the Guild of Film Critics of Russia.
Recent Works and Collaborations
In 2012, Mizgiryov directed "Convoy," which screened in the non-competitive Panorama section of the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. He also directed the play "Brothers" (2013) at the Gogol Center, a reinterpretation of Luchino Visconti's film "Rocco and His Brothers."
