Biography of Alessandra Ferri
Italian ballerina Alessandra Ferri was born in Milan and began her training at the ballet school of La Scala Theatre. She later enrolled at the Royal Ballet School in London.
International Stardom
Alessandra Ferri is an internationally acclaimed dancer and one of the most significant dramatic ballerinas of her generation. She has been awarded numerous prestigious international prizes throughout her career.
Prima Ballerina
Ferri served as a prima ballerina at the Royal Ballet in London from 1983 to 1985, American Ballet Theatre from 1985 to 2007, and La Scala Theatre in Milan from 1992 to 2007.
Early Success
Born in Milan, Ferri began her ballet studies at La Scala Theatre. She then joined the Royal Ballet School in London. In 1980, Alessandra won the Prix de Lausanne international competition in Switzerland and was accepted into the Royal Ballet company. She gained fame in 1983 when Sir Kenneth MacMillan chose her, at the age of 19, to dance the leading roles in his ballets "Romeo and Juliet," "Manon," and "Mayerling." Alessandra Ferri received the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award and was named Ballerina of the Year by Dance & Dancers magazine and The New York Times in 1983.
American Ballet Theatre
In 1985, Mikhail Baryshnikov invited Ferri to join the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) for a world tour. She danced with Baryshnikov in the 1986 film version of "Giselle." In ABT, she performed leading roles in ballets such as "Romeo and Juliet," "Giselle," "Manon," "Don Quixote," "La Bayadère," "The Nutcracker," "La Sonnambula," "Swan Lake," and "The Merry Widow," among others.
International Guest Star
Since 1990, Alessandra Ferri has been touring the world as an international guest star. In 1992, Roland Petit invited her to dance the leading role in his version of "Carmen" at the Paris National Opera. She also performed in other ballets by Petit. From 1992, Ferri served as a prima ballerina at La Scala Theatre in Milan. She has performed in Buenos Aires, Rome, Naples, London, New York, Toronto, Marseille, Sydney, Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Paris, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Osaka, Athens, Lausanne, Seoul, Monaco, Rome, and Stuttgart. Alessandra Ferri received the Benois de la Danse Prize in 2000.
