Italian Racing Driver Alessandro Nannini

Alessandro Nannini is an Italian racing driver and a participant in the Formula-1 World Championship. He is also known as the brother of the famous singer and composer Gianna Nannini.

Early Career

In 1980, Nannini started his racing career in off-road races driving the Lancia Stratos. The following year, he made his debut in circuit racing in the Formula Italia.

Formula-2 and Sportscar Racing

From 1982 to 1984, Nannini competed in the Formula-2 championship. In 1984 and 1985, he participated in the World Sports-Prototype Championship, where he achieved one victory.

Formula-1 Career

In 1986 and 1987, Nannini raced in the Formula-1 World Championship for the Minardi team, but did not score any points. In 1988, he moved to the more competitive Benetton team, which greatly improved his results. He secured two podium finishes and finished tenth in the championship. The following year, after Ayrton Senna's disqualification, Nannini finished second in Japan and was promoted to first place. In total, Nannini achieved four podium finishes in 1989 and finished sixth in the championship.

Helicopter Accident and Aftermath

In 1990, Nannini's Formula-1 career came to an end after a serious helicopter accident in his hometown of Siena, just a week after the Spanish Grand Prix. His right hand was nearly severed, but doctors were able to restore functionality. However, the accident resulted in limited mobility of his right hand, making it impossible for him to continue his Formula-1 career.

Later Career

After his recovery, Nannini competed in the Italian Touring Car Championship in 1992 and made his debut in the DTM championship the following year. His most successful season in touring car racing was in the 1996 ITC championship, where he achieved seven race wins and finished third overall.
