Early Life and Career

Alex started figure skating at the age of 7, initially as a singles skater. However, in 2004, he switched to ice dancing and formed a partnership with his sister. They made their international debut at the Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel, where they won with an 11-point lead over their competitors. They placed second at the Grand Prix in Madrid, losing to the Russian pair, Ekaterina Riazanova and Jonathan Guerreiro. Their success allowed them to qualify for the Grand Prix Final, where they finished fourth.

In 2009, Alex and Maia won the silver medal at the U.S. Junior Championships, but finished behind Madison Chock and Greg Zuerlein. They also placed second at the Junior World Championships that year. The following season, they won the U.S. Junior Championships and two Junior Grand Prix events. They went on to win the bronze medal at the Grand Prix Final and placed fourth at the Junior World Championships.

Rise to Success

In the 2010-2011 season, Alex and Maia placed third at the NHK Trophy after a mishap during their short dance. However, their strong free dance performance allowed them to secure a third-place finish overall. They also placed third at Skate America that year. Their success earned them a spot on the national team, where they competed at the Four Continents Championships and World Championships, winning silver and bronze medals respectively.

In the 2016-2017 season, Alex and Maia won their first national title, becoming the U.S. Champions. They went on to win the Cup of China and Skate America, qualifying for the Grand Prix Final. At the Four Continents Championships, they improved their previous silver medal performance and won the bronze medal. They also won bronze at the World Championships later that season.

Olympic Season

In the 2017-2018 season, Alex and Maia started their Olympic campaign by winning the Russian Grand Prix event. They continued their success by winning the bronze medal at the World Championships in Helsinki. They are currently ranked 6th in the International Skating Union (ISU) rankings as of December 13, 2017.

Alex Shibutani's dedication and talent have made him one of the top ice dancers in the world. Together with his sister, Maia, he continues to make a mark in the sport with their technical skills and captivating performances.
