Early Life and Education


Alex Kapranos was born on March 20, 1972, in Almondsbury, England. His mother was English, while his father was of Greek descent, which explains his unique last name. When Alex was seven, his family moved to Scotland, where he attended school in Edinburgh before settling in a suburb of Glasgow. At the age of 17, he completed his secondary education and enrolled at the University of Aberdeen to study theology. However, he soon realized that theology was not the right fit for him and decided to pursue other interests. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Strathclyde, where he was named the Graduate of the Year in 2005.

Before the formation of Franz Ferdinand, Kapranos worked various jobs, including chef, bartender, driver, welder, and lecturer. He was also involved in the music scene in Glasgow.
